Money!?! From Webcomix!?! (No Sunday in Comix: Part 1)

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Stephen Money Full 72So friend and fellow cartoonist Gabe Ostley brought up some good points about money and webcomix on another part of our blog.

How does “free media” reward the people who publish it? Can someone really make a reasonable living making webcomix or will it always be more of a passion for us and less of a business?

Tough questions we’re all asking ourselves these days.

This is, invariably, the subject of any blog related to the field of comix and I’m relatively certain you’d be able to find it pretty high on the list of topics for most art/hobby messageboards. Everyone wants to figure out a way to “live the dream” and make a reasonable wage out doing the thing they love. Every one of us.

The Laestrygonians (Second Attempt Accepted)

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Ulysses_OConnellPhew! This was a toughie as described previously. Chiefly because the ‘real’ narrative only kicks in halfway through – the first part concerned with Leopold’s internal ramblings and musing on subjects diverse! So for the first part we are taken along with Leo on a walk around the city looking for some lunchtime sustenance. I think we’re all too familiar with Mr Bloom’s quirky fondness for food and the resultant action upon his system. We won’t be disappointed here. But that’s ahead of us. First we have to ponder the what and the why as to his train of thoughts for the first sixteen or so pages of Laestrygonians. (more…)

“Seen” in context (iii)

Ulysses_Money_loveSo, last week I waffled a bit about monetization. I didn’t really mean to but it kinda came up while I was thinking about the bigger picture of motivation and as we all know money is the prime motivator for a lot of people – especially those who haven’t got it! I didn’t see many (any) answers – which is worrying – if only for the reason that there may be no easy answers for anyone to give on that question. What I’m asking today though is: why would anyone want to make webcomics, or print comics for that matter, if not for monetary reward? (more…)

Well, that was some vacation. Last year, when my wife and I went off to San Francisco, we came back to a broken air conditioner in the house. This year, its back from Paris in time to have my computer go on the fritz. It’s getting unsafe to leave the house! Fortunately most of the important things about ULYSSES “SEEN” all wind up on Josh’s desktop, so mostly all that was lost is my time and a bunch of notes.

Josh has been putting together a lot of stuff for the site in my absence as the next pages are getting ready to go up. Something a lot of fans and supporters have been asking about is ways to help spread the word on their own blogs (thanks, guys, we need all the help we can get!) We’ve put together some avatar images, some desktop wallpaper images, and some promo images to be used wherever you feel you can. We will be adding to this section from time to time and we’ve got plenty up there to start with.

We’ve also fixed a technical issue that we’ve had for some time: If you’re a registered user, you can now upload a local avatar to use only on this site, if you feel your global avatar (or lack thereof) isn’t giving you the image you desire for your commentary on this site.

You can click here, or go to the newly added “Downloads” section on the nav bar. We’re back on track now, folks, with plenty of new things rolling your way all this month.

Enjoy!

Ulysses_UmbertoEcoBack once one more dear readers to give you a little look-see around the interwebs regarding what the talk is on our favourite subject.

Blogger Laura Valerie mentions in her ‘to read’ list my current and my last ‘most difficult book to read’ right above one another. I’ll just say that Focault’s Pendulum though weighty in its own right is a cinch next to this beast! And speaking of Umberto Eco he manages to give Joyce more than a name check in this Spiegel interview that has been publicised all over this month. November has been quite a month of Joyce for blogger Veronica Frydel too. She tackles the novel and posts once, twice and thrice on her blog. Good luck with the journalism Veronica. (more…)
