Haines is a bit of ass but, as an Englishman, his merits for the Irish boys at table seem to be in his wallet. We probably should talk a bit about Haines&#039; inspiration here, Dermot Trench. JJQ (James Joyce Quarterly) has a good, clear description here;

A big problem with the Celtic Revival is, &quot;where&#039;s the money for country tales?&quot; We&#039;ll see this again in Stephen and Mulligan&#039;s conversation about Haines, but I think it&#039;s important to remember that the boys here, keepers of the omphalos, know that they&#039;re playing their parts, shucking and jiving their wits for the British moneybags.
